GOP Establishment Makes Late Primary Play in Arizona House Battleground

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2014/08/gop-establishment-makes-late-primary-play-in-arizona-house-battleground/443454/ Establishment conservatives are convinced Tuesday's Republican primary for the right to take on Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick will determine whether the general election is one of the most competitive in the country—or a dud. When Arizona state House Speaker Andy Tobin entered the race in October of last year, many expected him to run away with the Republican nomination. Yet Tobin has been mired in a rough race with state Rep. Adam Kwasman and self-funding rancher Gary Kiehne, and he never had the funds to run TV ads to introduce himself to primary voters. After problems in the last few elections, the GOP has done a good job advancing solid general-election candidates through this year's primaries. But some Republicans say Arizona's conservative 1st District is a lost cause without Tobin. "There's no way this race will be competiti...

Jeb Bush has a serious talk radio problem

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2015/02/02/jeb-bush-has-a-serious-talk-radio-problem/?utm_term=.9d21b5ac2139 Jeb Bush is one of the leading 2016 possibilities among the GOP establishment, but he has an enduring problem among conservatives -- especially Laura Ingraham and other influential talk radio hosts. Since his announcement in December that he would “actively explore” a White House run, conservative radio hosts have unleashed a torrent of criticism aimed squarely at Bush, whom they portray as an entitled, dynastic RINO (“Republican in name only”) out of step with the GOP base. That deep-seated disdain is bad news for Bush, who is already slated to navigate a competitive and crowded primary full of candidates eager to run to his right. "Jeb is gonna go out there going, ‘Well, I'm not exactly like my brother but it's hard for me to figure out what I disagree with him on,’” Ingraham told her listeners Friday morning, referring to his older bro...

Social media an emerging career field for young professionals

http://www.newstimes.com/local/article/Social-media-an-emerging-career-field-for-young-463177.php DANBURY --  Western Connecticut State University  student  Eddie Maher , 21, used Facebook and Twitter accounts to promote an independent film his uncle produced in 2008. His work impressed recruiters at TechniPower Systems, an engineering company in Danbury, and they offered him an internship as a "social media marketing specialist." He created and now manages their Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube accounts. "I pretty much set up the skeleton for their whole online marketing campaign," Maher said. Social media could be an emerging career field, he said. At a recent university job fair, a lot of recruiters were advertising jobs that solely had to do with social media, he said. As the political director for the  Tom Foley  for Governor campaign, social networking has become part of the job description for Danbury resident  Bill Cortese . "T...

Danbury man makes Hartford Top 40 list

http://www.newstimes.com/local/article/Danbury-man-makes-Hartford-Top-40-list-4883.php DANBURY--Two years ago, Bill Cortese was a Marine lance corporal, working to win the hearts and minds of people in Djibouti, an impoverished country with a population of less than half a million people in the Horn of Africa. These days, the 22-year-old Danbury resident spends his workdays trying to win the hearts and minds, or at least the votes, of members of the state legislature as a lobbyist for the Connecticut chapter of the  Associated Builders  and Contractors. But despite the light-years difference between the two jobs, Cortese brings the same passion and dedication to it that has marked most of what he's done since graduating from  Danbury High School  in 2004, or maybe even before that. "I'm a high-energy, high-strung kind of guy," said Cortese. It's a personality well-suited to the demands of being a lobbyist at the state Capitol, where 80-hour work weeks a...

The Survivor: How Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick Held On

Image
https://www.rollcall.com/news/election-results-2014-ann-kirkpatrick-survivor Republican operatives called her race "cooked." One national news organization  put her chances at victory  of 12 percent. After all, voters in Arizona's 1st District had already fired Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick once before — in a toxic climate in 2010.   But as House Democrats fell across the country on Nov. 4, Kirkpatrick didn't just win re-election. She expanded her margin from 2012, proving naysayers wrong thanks to one, simple political maxim: To win, a candidate has to be better than his or her opponent.   And she was. Her rival, state Speaker Andy Tobin, was a top recruit for national Republicans. The party went all in for him, spending millions against Kirkpatrick on television.   But, "people know me," she said in a phone interview last week. "They're common-sense people, and I think they saw through the partisan games."   The Big Fir...

Republican race razor-close in Congressional District 1

http://tucson.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/republican-race-razor-close-in-congressional-district/article_794c5dae-8ea5-5672-a662-51cdc7fb7ae1.html The tight three-way Republican primary race in Congressional District 1 was too close to call Tuesday night. And with potentially tens of thousands of votes remaining to be counted in the sprawling district that covers portions of 11 counties, it could be days before a winner is known. Businessman  Gary Kiehne  was ahead by 400 votes as the clock ticked toward midnight Tuesday, with state Reps.  Andy Tobin  and  Adam Kwasman  hot on his heels. The district includes Oro Valley, Marana and parts of 10 other counties in Eastern and Northern Arizona. The Republican nominee will take on incumbent Democrat  Ann Kirkpatrick  in the general election. Political pundits have labeled the race a tossup. The Republican winner will essentially be starting over with fundraising, while Kirkpat...

Navajo vote could factor into tight Arizona race

http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sdut-navajo-vote-could-factor-into-tight-arizona-race-2014oct30-story.html FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — On the airwaves of a popular Navajo radio station, President  Barack Obama  uses the Navajo greeting "Ya'at'eeh" and implores tribal members to get out and vote for Democrats. The party is trying hard to hang on to the seat held by U.S. Rep.  Ann Kirkpatrick  and needs Navajo voters who lean Democrat to turn out in droves in what is one of the hardest-fought congressional races in the country. Kirkpatrick has learned to speak the Navajo language, regularly appears at the tribe's legislative sessions and has sponsored fairs and rodeos. She has touted transportation and infrastructure projects, and funding for the  Head Start  education program and for reservation schools that don't have a tax base. Her Republican opponent, Arizona House Speaker Andy Tobin, has been to the Navajo Nation several times, including speaki...

Life on Mars, or Running in Arizona’s 1st District

By Jason Dick https://www.rollcall.com/news/elections-2014-ann-kirkpatrick-any-tobin-arizonas-1st-district TUBA CITY, Ariz. — The Grand Canyon State's 1st District is so vast and diverse that running for political office involves time travel.   It’s also helpful to pick up a little of a language so difficult to master it formed an unbreakable code that helped the United States win World War II.   But first, the time travel. When visiting the Navajo Nation in Northern Arizona, the largest tribe of a dozen in the district, Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick and her Republican opponent, state Speaker Andy Tobin, have to build in an extra hour.   Why? A befuddled cellphone won’t pick up on it, but the Navajo Nation observes Daylight Saving Time. The rest of the Grand Canyon State, brandishing its contrarian streak, never changes its clocks.   So to ensure Kirkpatrick was in line for the Western Navajo Nation here at 9 a.m. DST on Oct. 18, the usual ...
